Depending on the employer, a hospital chaplain must hold at least an undergraduate degree in a religious studies or counseling field. The process may take 4-6 years, in addition to completion of post-graduate clinical pastoral education credits and certification through one of the national chaplain organizations.

To become a Chaplain, you need a bachelor's degree or master's degree in divinity or religious studies, or a religious degree from a seminary. You must meet the qualifications to be ordained as a clergy member in a particular faith, such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, or other religious traditions.

Most organizations that employ chaplains require specific training and certification including a relevant master's degree, supervised clinical training, and endorsement from the chaplain's religious group. Healthcare institutions and the military require certification from the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc.
