Some of the things that Mahe de Labourdonnais developed included warehouses, a dry dock for shipbuilding, an armoury and powder magazine, barracks and a fort, an aqueduct, which brought a good water supply over miles from Grande Rivière Nord Ouest, and a hospital.

Domaine de Labourdonnais is famous for its château, which was built between 1856 and 1859 and was inhabited by a Mauritian family for over 150 years. The driveway up to the mansion is spectacular, lined on both sides by Intendance trees, creating a real spectacle when the house comes into view.

The French governor brought in additional workers from India and slaves from various parts of Africa to work in plantations and newly setup sugar factories of Isle de France. Sugar production soon generated great wealth and even today the sugar sector industry is one of the pillars of the Mauritian economy.

This windmill is located in Caudan and was built in 1736 as a flour mill. Its primary function was to supply flour to the dockers at the harbor. That was the reign of Mahé de Labourdonnais. Since 1999, the windmill has been a museum and can be visited.
