Pavement markings are used to convey messages to roadway users. They indicate which part of the road to use, provide information about conditions ahead, and indicate where passing is allowed. Yellow lines separate traffic flowing in opposite directions. Drivers should stay to the right of yellow lines.

Other markings which may be used to guide traffic through intersections in urban settings include the 4” dotted lines, also known as “skip-striping”. These stripes are typically used to delineate turning movements and can be useful in identifying to motorists the anticipated turning path of truck traffic.

Parking Lot Striping, also known as Traffic Markings, provides organized traffic flow and clearly marked parking stalls and areas for vehicles to park.

If used, the diagonal or longitudinal lines should be 300 to 600 mm (12 to 24 in) wide and spaced 300 to 1500 mm (12 to 60 in) apart. The marking design should avoid the wheel paths, and the spacing should not exceed 2.5 times the line width.
