Roman blinds are made of one solid sheet of fabric that folds up in pleats; Venetian blinds are constructed of narrow horizontal slats. Roman blind fabrics are often very elaborate and decorative, whilst Venetian blinds are minimalistic, and made of totally different materials.

Roller blinds are better for maximising sunlight If you want to fix a blind inside the recess and allow as much sunlight in as possible, opt for roller blinds over roman blinds. Made to measure roller blinds roll up neatly and compactly and therefore don't cover the window pane as much as bespoke roman blinds.

There are no hard and fast rules but from a practical perspective, curtains work better for warmth and added texture, and blinds work well when space is tight. We usually say curtains are good for living rooms and bedrooms, blinds are good for kitchens and bathrooms.

While roller blinds can come in great blackout options, hundreds of colours, and match almost any room – even the day and night option can't match venetian blinds for light control. Choosing a double roller or day and night option will give more control, but they are more expensive.
