The Shar-pei is an ancient Chinese breed that has over 2000 years of history. They have been used for fighting, herding, and guarding, but these days they can make a great canine companion.

In a Shar-Pei, the HAS2 gene goes into overdrive creating way too much hyaluronan and that causes the trademark wrinkles, which are especially visible in Shar-Pei puppies. By the time a Shar-Pei is full grown, its wrinkles have settled down and are typically just in the face, head and neck.

Shar Peis are devoted and loyal family pets and can get along well with older children given the right socialisation. We wouldn't recommend getting a Shar Pei if you have younger children as they can be such independent dogs who prefer to do their own thing at times (which young children might not understand).
