While some argue that blue is the rarest coat color in almost any breed, including the Poodle, others claim the red Poodle is less common while some say apricot Poodles are “the rarest in the world.”

However, most breeders maintain that a separate gene, known as the “Rufus” gene, influences the red Poodle's coat. This gene is said to darken the apricot coat, making it red. Red Poodles are one of the rarest poodle color varieties, and the addition of the “Rufus” gene only makes them more uncommon.

Reputable breeders take pride in their puppies and ensure that they come from the best pedigrees and ancestries. They also make sure their dogs get the best vet care possible. Therefore, they command a high price for their pups.

Reds can go through many color changes as the dog grows. They occasionally are born a very bright red and then lighten over time. Some will stay lighter, however in some cases the Poodle will then darken up again as he or she ages. When a red does lighten, the color will usually become a sort of cinnamon color.
