Batik is a type of resist printing process in which wax is applied to the fabric in specific areas. When the wax hardens, the fabric is submerged in dye. The wax prevents the dye from reaching the fibers. The fabric is then boiled to remove the wax.

Compared to other fabrics, batiks have a much tighter weave. This is to help them through the dyeing process, so they can be quite stiff to work with sometimes and don't tend to drape softly like traditional cotton quilting fabric.

The bolder prints work well as accent fabrics, plus the fact they fray less than other fabrics mean they are good for applique too. The textured look of batiks mean they make great borders and binding as well. Batiks are also popular in garment sewing, predominantly dresses and skirts.
