Definitely explore the alleys and bazaars on foot, but hop on a bus or tram if you are going greater distances. Also, be sure to carry a reliable map. Google Maps works perfectly in Istanbul and can be used for walking directions as well as public transportation transfers.

Istanbul demands a minimum of two days, but we'd suggest at least four days to do it justice. Even with a week, you'd find yourself running out of time trying to tackle everything the city has to offer.

We love the old Sultanahmet area. It's our 4th visit. If you want to see the tourist sights, mosques, grand bazaar etc you must stay in this area. It's a beautiful area filled with cobbled streets, beautiful mosques, bazaars, street vendors etc...
