Originally, pugs had long legs, longer noses, straight tails and a slim build. However, they've been bred over time to have shorter legs, flatter noses, curly tails and a stockier build.

If a Pug looks lean with thin legs, it is not a purebred Pug. Purebred pugs have thick, strong legs and have mass on their bodies. Purebred Pugs have deep wrinkles on their face. They also have moles on their cheeks.

Another perk of Pug parenting is that they're not typically big barkers, but that doesn't mean they never bark or make any noise. All dogs make noise to some extent, it's just that some breeds, including the Pug, are known for being less “barky” in general than others.

It also means that Pugs do not do very well in overly hot climates or with extreme exercise. As a result, Pugs do best as primarily indoor dogs, with controlled excursions outside. While their coat is short, they do shed quite a bit.
