Shark Tank & Dallas Mavericks owner billionaire Mark Cuban showed up to jury duty in Dallas County this week. Not only did he take time out of his busy schedule to show up, he actually made it to the jury and served on a misdemeanor DWI trial. Without going into all the facts (as facts are important), it is noteworthy to remark that the jury’s verdict was Not Guilty. Does this mean Mark or the jury in any way supports DWI? Of course not, most importantly, it means that the jurors took their oaths seriously to follow the law and their verdict represents that the state had not proved their case beyond all reasonable doubt. It is heart warming to see the protections that the Founding Fathers put in place for all of our liberties at play and working. They envisioned a system where no one is above the law and the law answers to the people, not the government. A jury of one’s peers is the best way to ensure a steady bedrock of rights. After all, “absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Kudos to Mark Cuban for fulfilling his civic duty. Let this be a shining beacon for anyone who believes their time is too valuable to show up for jury service. May the United States Supreme Court also take note- they have refused to hear a New Jersey case where the citizen accused was denied their federal constitutional right to a jury in a misdemeanor case.
