Yoga for Autoimmune Disorders

Autoimmune Disorders are complex health issues and management requires a multi-professional approach coordinated by a team of health professionals, social workers and other alternative modalities, including Yoga. Yoga, while not a magic bullet, can address some of the challenges, both physically and mentally confronted by those handling an Autoimmune Disorder. Studies by Dr. Loren Fishman, Columbia University, NY, have shown that gentle exercise and relaxation, like yoga, can help reduce inflammation in the body and provide a sense of calm and well-being that can lower the body’s production of the physical and mental stressors that compromise the immune system. This workshop will incorporate postures and methods that will stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (the calming influence) which can reduce the body’s stress response. In addition, this workshop will teach you about the Relaxation Response and how yoga, meditation and breath can elicit a resting state that has a profound effect on the immune system. This workshop counts as 2 continuing education credits as recognized by the Yoga Alliance.
