Is the 'Taste of Winston-Salem' Represented by Hot Dogs? Ours is less of a unique style than a tradition that has endured while other food fads have come and gone. J.S. Pulliam’s Barbecue has been in business for more than 100 years, and hot dogs, enthroned atop a toasted, buttery bun, are definitely the star. Serious hot dog afficianados writing for “Every Day with Rachael Ray” once named it the best hot dog in the South. Not many cities can boast a hot dog business with as long a history as Pulliam’s, but it’s not the only one here that has endured. Kermit’s Hot Dog House celebrated the half-century mark in 2016. The southside landmark arose in a different era, of course, when drive-ins were still popular, so getting a footlong with curb service made it a popular destination that has stood the test of time. PB’s Takeout has offered hot dogs in its frills-free Ardmore location for decades, and often makes lists of the best hot dogs in town. And Dairi-O, which earned its reputation over decades in King, now has locations in and around Winston-Salem, bringing their popular hot dogs here. It’s pretty clear though, that Winston-Salem is a minor-league city with major-league dogs.
