Our own family members can also be called relatives. Depending on the size of the family, we have a nuclear family and an extended family. The nuclear family or immediate family consists of your mother, father, and your loving siblings. An extended family consists of the people of your father's or mother's family.

Family member means his or her spouse, their minor children and any relative or other person who is living with him or her (like father- in- law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law or brother-in-law). They are the closest people we have in our lives. They are the people who always stay by our side through thick and thin.

Depends on context; If you talk about one person it is a family member. If you talk multiple people, they are family members. Both are correct if used in the right context.
