In 1954, the Cambridge plant closed, ending a very prosperous run. In an unsuccessful attempt to reopen and stay open, the company finally melted down in 1958, selling many of its molds and equipment to Imperial Glass Company in Bellaire, Ohio.

Early history The Cambridge Glass Company was chartered in 1873 by a group of Cambridge, Ohio businessmen. But it was not until 1899, when the site was purchased by the newly formed National Glass Company, that funds became available to start the construction of this new glass factory.

Various items were made in clear, translucent, and opaque glass. Besides clear, white and black glass, Cambridge made glass of several distinct colors. Their famous trademark is the letter "C" confined within an equilateral triangle. Not all items bear this signature.

Collectors who appreciate quality glass still visit Cambridge for antique glass of the area and the new glass companies. Cambridge is the birthplace of Colonel John Glenn, U.S. Senator and American Astronaut. It is also the birthplace of William “Hopalong Cassidy” Boyd.
